Energy powers society. Modern societies require huge amounts of energy. To produce energy, humans burn fossil fuels. By burning fossil fuels, we release greenhouse gases, increasing its concentration in the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect causes the climate to change and the globe to warm. Climate change causes glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise. They also create extreme weather conditions. Rising sea levels and extreme weather lead to the permanent loss of homes, mass biodiversity loss, and droughts. These all lead to the death and impoverization of millions if not billions, and possibly the extinction of the human race.
